Milestones represented here include the landmark exhibitions “Punk Art“ (1978) and “Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Moment” (1989); groundbreaking shows focused on Black art such as “Art in Washington and Its Afro-American Presence,” 1940–1970* (1985) and “The Blues Aesthetic: Black Culture and Modernism” (1989); and “Mixed Blessings: New Art in a Multicultural America” (1992); alongside ambitious experimental and wide-ranging art projects like “The Biggest Boots in the World” by Bob Wade (1979), “Bookworks” (1981-1995), “The Ritz Project” (1983), and Frank Warren’s “PostSecret” (2006).
