Description:

The One Stroke at a Time Watercolor ArtBook is an interactive artist book by Lorenzo Piero Holder III and Dr. Vicenzio Holder-Perkins that invites you to participate in the creation of new collaborative artworks by using watercolor to respond to a series of original line drawings produced by the artists.

The book was developed as an extension of Dr. Perkins and Holder’s ongoing collaborative practice, which began rooted in art therapy following a stroke experienced by Dr. Perkins in 2018. During his recovery, Dr. Perkins began sketching as a way to rebuild movement and perception, while Holder responded through color, mark-making, and composition. This exchange evolved into a process of mutual care and creative experimentation, where making art together became both a method of healing and a shared language.

As uncle and nephew, their collaboration reflects a cross-generational dialogue shaped by estrangement, resilience, and queerness. Working in sequence and at times simultaneously, they complete and transform one another’s gestures, challenging fixed roles between patient and practitioner. Their practice expands how artistic collaboration can function within spaces of disability, kinship, and transformation.

The book gathers some of the earliest marks made during this process, foregrounding presence, vulnerability, and adaptation over technical mastery. Rather than emphasizing perfection or skill, it extends an open invitation to engage directly with what is in front of you—one gesture at a time.

The publication is released as a limited edition of 25 presale copies, each numbered and signed by both artists.
